Biology

A race born for hunting, Petrinobis possess tough hides and sharp claws, not to mention incredibly fast reflexes. Their wings, obviously, allow them to fly. A Petrinobi's greatest assets, though, are its endurance and patience: they are able to stalk their prey for days on end with minimal sleep and no food or water.

Petrinobis are infamous for their venom, secreted through the claws and fangs, which is able to turn organic and some synthetic material into stone. Thankfully, the effects of the poison aren't permanent, with the actual duration varying based on the target's constitution. Also, when the poison wears off, the target returns to its previous condition, as if they hadn't been infected to begin with. Obviously, some species, such as Petrosapiens, are immune to Petrinobi venom. It is not yet known what effects the venom would have on Osmosians. Strangely, some targets are able to remain conscious and self-aware while petrified whereas others cannot remember anything that happens, almost like a form of suspended animation. The factors involved in retaining consciousness are still unknown.

Petrinobis experience unusual effects when infected with their own poison: although they do indeed turn to stone, Petrinobis are not only conscious but are still able to move, similar to Osmosians that absorb rock. Having used this ability for generations, Petrinobis are able to petrify themselves at will and revert to "normal" as soon as they no longer wish to be stone. A Petrinobi's endurance is greatly increased while in stone-form: they can last for weeks without feeding and can resist more damage. This is not without its drawbacks, however, as stone-Petrinobis are much heavier than flesh-Petrinobis. As a side-effect, stone-Petrinobis are much slower and cannot fly, although their wings can still be used to defend and balance. It is worth noting, though, that their increased weight means stone-Petrinobis can cause more damage.

Recommended uses

Since the Ultimatrix's fail-safes revert users to their original form after a set time, a Petrinobi's patient nature cannot be fully utilized. Rather, this form would be better suited for its petrifying venom, either incapacitating targets or allowing them to be easily captured and safely transported. Petrinobis are also well-suited for missions where stealth is a major factor, which isn't to say they aren't effective in combat.

Ultimate Evolution

An evolved Petrinobi has its own venom pumping through its blood, leaving it in a permanent "petrified" state. To compensate for the increased weight, evolved Petrinobis are faster and stronger than normal allowing them full range of movement, including flight. Also, despite being permanently petrified, evolved Petrinobis still secrete their venom, allowing them to continue to petrify others.

and, since I was working on Stonehide anyways, I figured "What the hell?" and decided to enter him

If it wasn't for the contest, though, you probably wouldn't see Stonehide for a while. The main reason is because he's part of a set of mythology-themed aliens I'm working on. I call them the "Mythos Pentagram". I'll go into more detail later, but for now all you need to know is that they're like Eon and Nanomech: Ben fights them, then acquires them. I was originally going to upload a "group shot" of the Pentagram, then release the individual bios for Ben's versions (on that note, this is Stonehide's "Ultimate" form; the "normal" forms will be in the group photo). Although Stonehide came out a little early, the rest of the Pentagram will have to wait until after the group shot is up

Anyways, Stonehide is based off of gargoyles. Based on my research, I think the "living statues" bit is a relatively new theme.The original gargoyles were essentially storm drains modeled after enemies of the church (distorted, of course, to make them look more monstrous). Still, I think a certain animated series popularized the concept of gargoyles as "stone by day, monster by night" creatures.

Although it wasn't my original plan, Stonehide wound up having a bit of a "ninja" theme to him. Not much, but worth noting

As I said, the image is technically of "Ultimate Stonehide", so you'll have to wait a while to see the "normal" version. The general design will be the same, just with different parts and colors. I wanted Stonehide's Ultimate form to be "scarier" than the normal form, so I wound up using a lot of parts with spikes on them (normal Stonehide will probably be "smoother"). The one thing I can't stand is the mouth: Spore doesn't have many mouths with prominent teeth, so I couldn't find many alternatives. I don't know what I'm gonna use for normal Stonehide's mouth...

And, of course, here's the index of all my original Ben 10 aliens, including some that I'm still working on but haven't finished yet. I don't know when they'll be out (I'd like to focus more on "The Quest for the Wheat Sword"), so just be patient
